New Lawmakers Take Oath of Office
28/01/09
Djibouti (HOL) - Two hundred new Somalia lawmakers have been sworn in the presidential headquarters in Djibouti. The new lawmakers come from the
Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) and would unite with their counterparts from the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in an effort
to form a unity government.
Dignitaries from different countries and organizations attended the swearing ceremony, including the UN ambassador to Somalia Mr. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah,
representatives from other countries as well as senior officers from Djibouti. The new lawmakers were called to the swearing podium by the Speakers of
the interim Parliament Mr. Sheik Adam Madobe and they swore in the name of Allah and promised to fulfil their duties with honesty and integrity.
The swearing ceremony represents the first step in the formation of unity government. Seventy five members, however, are still missing from the new
Parliament. The ARS reserved the 75 seats for opposition groups who are still outside the reconciliation process and individuals deemed necessary for
the reconciliation and reconstruction of the country.
The current membership of the Parliament stands at 475 who will elect an interim president on
Saturday
The enlargement of the Parliament came as a result of a lengthy negotiation between the ARS and the TFG to form a unity government. The negotiations,
however, led to the break up of the ARS into a moderate wing led by Sheik Sharif and a more militant group named Al-Shabab that is armed and controls
large parts of Southern Somalia, including the strategic towns of Kismayo and Baidao. Al-Shabab refuses to join the negotiations and is currently on
the US terrorist list.
