Somalia: African Union Peacekeeper Killed in Mogadishu Violence
14 September 2008
At least four people including an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeeper were killed Sunday in clashes with Islamist
insurgents, Radio Garowe reported.
The insurgents attacked AMISOM positions in Mogadishu's Hodan and Waberi districts, sparking deadly street fighting that
wounded at least 25 people, including two AMISOM peacekeepers.
Barigye Bahoku, the AMISOM spokesman, confirmed to reporters that one peacekeeper was killed and the insurgents escaped.
He condemned the insurgents for launching attacks behind civilian locations.
Sources at Medina Hospital told Radio Garowe that 23 wounded people were admitted today for treatment, after battles raged in
parts of the Somali capital.
In Baidoa, three police officers were wounded in an explosion Sunday.
Col. Ali Moallim, Bay region's police commander, confirmed to the press that the explosion was "intended" for his vehicle,
which was traveling through the center of Baidoa, an inland town 250km northwest of Mogadishu where the Somali parliament sits.
Violence has marred much of south-central Somalia since January 2007, when Ethiopian-backed government forces expelled Islamic
Courts rulers from Mogadishu and other parts of the country.
Al Shabaab insurgents have claimed responsibility for many attacks, but observers say several rebel groups are active across Somalia.
